Role Overview

The Automation Engineer will play a pivotal role in designing, implementing, and maintaining automation systems within our pharmaceutical manufacturing environment. This position requires expertise in PLCs, SCADA systems, industrial robotics, and GMP-compliant automation solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  1. System Design & Implementation

    • Design, develop, and implement automation solutions for pharmaceutical manufacturing processes.
    • Program and configure PLC, SCADA, and HMI systems (Siemens, Allen Bradley, Rockwell, or similar).
    • Integrate automated systems, robotics, and process control equipment to meet production needs.
  2. Process Optimization

    • Analyze existing production processes to identify opportunities for automation and performance improvements.
    • Implement innovative control strategies to enhance efficiency, quality, and safety.
    • Work closely with the production and quality teams to optimize systems in line with GMP standards.
  3. System Maintenance & Troubleshooting

    • Perform regular maintenance and system health checks on automation equipment to ensure reliability.
    • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve automation system issues promptly to minimize downtime.
    • Support validation, testing, and commissioning of new automation systems.
  4. Compliance & Documentation

    • Ensure all automation systems comply with pharmaceutical industry regulations, including GMP, GAMP 5, and FDA 21 CFR Part 11.
    • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including Functional Design Specifications (FDS), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and validation reports.
    • Participate in audits and ensure automation systems are audit-ready at all times.
  5. Collaboration & Training

    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including production, quality assurance, and IT, to align automation projects with business goals.
    • Provide training and support to operators and maintenance teams on automated systems.
    • Work with external vendors and contractors for project execution and support.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, or a related discipline.

  • Experience:

    • Minimum 3-5 years of experience as an Automation Engineer in the pharmaceutical or life sciences industry.
    • Hands-on experience with PLC programming, SCADA development, and HMI configuration.
    • Experience working in GMP-regulated environments and understanding of validation processes.
  • Technical Skills:

    • Proficiency in PLC programming (Siemens TIA Portal, Rockwell RSLogix, or equivalent).
    • Experience with SCADA/HMI systems (WinCC, FactoryTalk, Ignition, or similar).
    • Knowledge of process automation, robotics, and industrial communication protocols (e.g., Profibus, Modbus, Ethernet/IP).
    • Familiarity with DCS systems (Distributed Control Systems) is a plus.
    • Understanding of GAMP 5, validation (IQ, OQ, PQ), and FDA compliance.
  • Soft Skills:

    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with cross-functional teams.
    • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems) and integration with ERP systems.
  • Knowledge of Industry 4.0, IoT technologies, and data analytics.
  • Experience in LEAN manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies.
