Role Overview
The Automation Engineer will play a pivotal role in designing, implementing, and maintaining automation systems within our pharmaceutical manufacturing environment. This position requires expertise in PLCs, SCADA systems, industrial robotics, and GMP-compliant automation solutions.
Key Responsibilities
System Design & Implementation
- Design, develop, and implement automation solutions for pharmaceutical manufacturing processes.
- Program and configure PLC, SCADA, and HMI systems (Siemens, Allen Bradley, Rockwell, or similar).
- Integrate automated systems, robotics, and process control equipment to meet production needs.
Process Optimization
- Analyze existing production processes to identify opportunities for automation and performance improvements.
- Implement innovative control strategies to enhance efficiency, quality, and safety.
- Work closely with the production and quality teams to optimize systems in line with GMP standards.
System Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Perform regular maintenance and system health checks on automation equipment to ensure reliability.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve automation system issues promptly to minimize downtime.
- Support validation, testing, and commissioning of new automation systems.
Compliance & Documentation
- Ensure all automation systems comply with pharmaceutical industry regulations, including GMP, GAMP 5, and FDA 21 CFR Part 11.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, including Functional Design Specifications (FDS), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and validation reports.
- Participate in audits and ensure automation systems are audit-ready at all times.
Collaboration & Training
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including production, quality assurance, and IT, to align automation projects with business goals.
- Provide training and support to operators and maintenance teams on automated systems.
- Work with external vendors and contractors for project execution and support.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelorβs degree in Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, or a related discipline.
Experience:
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience as an Automation Engineer in the pharmaceutical or life sciences industry.
- Hands-on experience with PLC programming, SCADA development, and HMI configuration.
- Experience working in GMP-regulated environments and understanding of validation processes.
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in PLC programming (Siemens TIA Portal, Rockwell RSLogix, or equivalent).
- Experience with SCADA/HMI systems (WinCC, FactoryTalk, Ignition, or similar).
- Knowledge of process automation, robotics, and industrial communication protocols (e.g., Profibus, Modbus, Ethernet/IP).
- Familiarity with DCS systems (Distributed Control Systems) is a plus.
- Understanding of GAMP 5, validation (IQ, OQ, PQ), and FDA compliance.
Soft Skills:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with cross-functional teams.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Desirable Skills
- Experience with MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems) and integration with ERP systems.
- Knowledge of Industry 4.0, IoT technologies, and data analytics.
- Experience in LEAN manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies.
