Spacecraft Software Engineer (Early)

This position supports research aims within the Directed Energy Bioeffects & Mechanisms Core Research Area, which focuses on building a knowledge base of human biological responses across the electromagnetic spectrum. Work includes: Performs research and scientific work involving the application of knowledge of visual functions of humans and/or animals, both in the whole organism and at the cellular or molecular level under normal and abnormal conditions.  Performs analysis and uses systematic, disciplined, and quantifiable approaches to develop, execute, and manage projects related to optical radiation bioeffects of the visual system, from ultraviolet to near-Infrared wavelengths.  Utilizes experience and knowledge of the optics of light and optical lens designs to determine physiological objectives to assess ocular health and visual performance, develop and evaluate alternatives, design and conduct experiments, and analyze and interpret results.  It leads interdisciplinary teams that interact, coordinate, consult, and collaborate directly with military and civilian scientists within AFRL, as well as national and international organizations to enhance bioeffects knowledge. Prepares research results for reports, publications, and presentations and briefs AFRL S&T leadership and broader scientific community and at national and international conferences and meetings. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year or 52 weeks of specialized experience in this field equivalent to DR-01 (entry level) in the federal service or equivalent in an alternate pay system.   Applicants must also meet the Basic Qualification requirements for 413 (Physiology), or 0180 (Psychology) series to qualify.  Desired Qualifications Knowledge, Skills, and Acquisitions (KSAs): Master’s, Doctorate, or PhD in Physiology, Optometry, Psychology, or related field.
