This position supports research aims within the Directed Energy Bioeffects & Mechanisms Core Research Area, which focuses on building a knowledge base of human biological responses across the electromagnetic spectrum. Work includes: Performs research and scientific work involving the application of knowledge of visual functions of humans and/or animals, both in the whole organism and at the cellular or molecular level under normal and abnormal conditions.  Performs analysis and uses systematic, disciplined, and quantifiable approaches to develop, execute, and manage projects related to optical radiation bioeffects of the visual system, from ultraviolet to near-Infrared wavelengths.  Utilizes experience and knowledge of the optics of light and optical lens designs to determine physiological objectives to assess ocular health and visual performance, develop and evaluate alternatives, design and conduct experiments, and analyze and interpret results.  It leads interdisciplinary teams that interact, coordinate, consult, and collaborate directly with military and civilian scientists within AFRL, as well as national and international organizations to enhance bioeffects knowledge. Prepares research results for reports, publications, and presentations and briefs AFRL S&T leadership and broader scientific community and at national and international conferences and meetings. No Required Qualifications United States Citizenship Males must be registered for Selective Service These positions may be filled as a 5-year Flexible Length and Renewable Term Technical Appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc.) with the option to later convert to a permanent appointment. Security Clearance: This position requires possession of or the ability to obtain a Top-Secret security clearance These are Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) positions and require a Level 1 certification (Foundational). The selectees will have 24 months to meet APDP requirements or a waiver must be obtained. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year or 52 weeks of specialized experience in this field equivalent to DR-01 (entry level) in the federal service or equivalent in an alternate pay system.   Applicants must also meet the Basic Qualification requirements for 413 (Physiology), or 0180 (Psychology) series to qualify.  Desired Qualifications Knowledge, Skills, and Acquisitions (KSAs): Master’s, Doctorate, or PhD in Physiology, Optometry, Psychology, or related field. Human Visual System Knowledge – detailed knowledge of human visual system physiology and function Laser Experience – experience with laser concepts, laser systems, and optical designs/development Human Subjects Research Experience – developing and executing Human-Use protocols.  Leadership Experience – experience leading diverse teams and managing complex projects to meet cost, schedule, and performance expectations Computational Experience – Statistical and/or data analysis experience with coding languages such as MATLAB/R, Python, C+/C++.  When uploading documents, please utilize the naming convention listed below.
