Position Overview

Responsible for supervising the Andrology and Endocrine laboratories ensuring the reporting of test results to provide diagnostic information for patient care.

May supervise other laboratory technologists as assigned.

I.    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Acts as liaison with operating unit agencies, and outside officials regarding Lab’s policies and procedures; may make recommendations on policies or standards; 

    Coordinates the performance of daily and monthly quality control procedures; 

    Coordinates the routine and preventative maintenance on all instrumentation and takes appropriate corrective action; 

    Assists in the clinical evaluation and implementation of new and existing test procedures, equipment and products as they relate to lab; 

    Assists in validation processes of new equipment and tests, 

    Performs monthly inventory and initiates the ordering process, 

    Performs the duties of laboratory technologists proactively while setting positive examples of work habits and ethics in response to work load and staff coverage; 

    Independently performs complex testing procedures,  

    Trains new technologists according to current protocols and methodology, 

    Maintains patient confidentiality within HIPAA regulations; 

    Assists in preparing monthly reports and QC submission; 

    Prepares daily, monthly, quarterly qc paperwork for manager review. 

    Adheres to Illume's quality management program as per SOP

    Ensures staffing support is offered to Embryology laboratory daily, if available.

    Maintains staffing schedule for all locations.

    Keeps records and inventory 

    Performs and documents quality control procedures and instrument preventive maintenance; 

    Assists manager in scheduling preventative maintenance with outside vendors

    Assists Manager in performing monthly review of qc and addressing outliers as described in SOP, Maintains importance of PPE and Universal Precautions throughout the lab and ensures laboratory technicians have the necessary PPE

    Together with manager, initiates cryotank inventory annually and monitors for completion

    Initiates lot comparisons and monitors for completion

    Initiates Cal check processes on all analytes in all locations

    Initiates Carryover protocol in all locations

    May be assigned special projects

    Reviews accession log for completion, expiration of all supply and Quarterly QA of all locations alongside the Manager.

    Communicates effectively to Manager and act as liaison between manager and lab staff 

    Attends QI meetings.   

    Coordinates structured allocation of staff to assist in Embryology when staffing allows

    Assists in scheduling  quarterly fire drills and chemical spill drills, in all locations 

II.    Minimum Qualifications Required – Knowledge, Skills and Ability

    Considerable knowledge of relevant agency policies and procedures; 

    considerable knowledge of State and Federal laws, statutes and regulations; 

    Considerable knowledge of chemistry, hematology, histology, biology, bacteriology, microbiology, serology, immunoassay; 

    considerable knowledge of laboratory instrumentation including computers; 

    knowledge of standard clinical laboratory procedures including safety practices; 

    knowledge of scientific methods; 

    interpersonal skills; supervisory ability; oral and written communication skills; ability to work independently; ability to work quickly and accurately under stressful conditions. Takes initiative to meet with other team leaders monthly, to maintain relationships and address any necessary topics. 

III.    Education, Experience and Training

    Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Cytogenetic Technology or a related field, 

    Minimum of 1.5 years experience plus maintaining exemplary employee status.  

    Must show attention to detail and have the ability to follow strict clinical protocols and processes.

IV.    Working Conditions

    Incumbents in this class are exposed to disagreeable odors, infectious and other hazardous materials.  

    Work requires visual strain due to prolonged/extended close examination of specimens; prolonged periods of standing and walking.

V.    HIPAA

    Administrative staff will have access to Protected Health Information (PHI) during the course of his/her work activities. Administrative staff will use this information to prepare both patients and medical records for visits with the provider and to keep the flow of work going smoothly in the center. Applying the minimum necessary standard of HIPAA, the designated records sets to which this employee will have access include: the full medical record and RESource. 

VI.    ADDITIONAL JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

Physical Requirements

    Standing for long periods of time; minimal sitting, and stooping. Grasping and feeling are necessary body movements.

    Sensory requirements of speech, touch, vision, and hearing to normal range, with or without correction.

    Requires manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination 

    Must be able to drive a car and enter and exit the car without another person’s help.

Mental Requirements

    Must have the ability to work successfully under stressful conditions, and must be capable of adapting to varying workloads and work assignments on a frequent basis.

    Must have the ability to make sound, independent judgments based on protocols, and also be able to collaborate with other multidisciplinary team members in an appropriate fashion.

    Must have the ability to comprehend and perform oral and written instructions and procedures.

    Must have effective reading and comprehension skills.

    Must have strong communication skills, written and verbal to interact with people of all professional and social levels.

Environmental Conditions

    Will work in an inside environment with temperature control.

    Some electrical hazards working with equipment. Some examples of equipment used are computer terminal, calculator, copy machine, fax machine, and telephone. 

    Some overtime will be required.

    Work routines/schedules are occasionally subject to change on short notice.

Staff member must meet immunizations requirements as stated in Illume Fertility immunization policy.
